For those of you who knew Joey prior to the engagement you might be wondering “how did he end up in Windsor? When did he become such a bible nut?” And, for those of you who knew Lexi you might be wondering “who is Joey? I don’t remember him from OLSWA or homeschool co-op?!”
Joey and Lexi met through constant video chats and phone calls before it was cool. They worked together at a pro-life organization, but Joey was in Ottawa and Lexi worked from home in Kingsville. On video call team meetings Joey noticed a cute girl in a little 2” x 2” box on his screen, and when he wrote her bio for the website he was even more intrigued. However, it wasn’t until one evening when the two had a work call together, one-on-one that Joey fell madly, head-over-heels in love with Lexi.
The two would use any excuse to have work phone calls after that, and when Christmas break threatened not having work calls for two weeks, the two began writing a novel together and talking more than ever.
That New Year's Day Joey said to Justin Cosico, now his best man, that he was definitely going to marry that girl. He turned out to be right.
The two met face-to-face first on St. Valentine’s day! Lexi almost didn’t want to invite the boy because of the implications, but she was in Barry’s Bay, a three-hour drive from Ottawa, and there was a St. Valentine’s day dance. We might say there was some chemistry and intrigue.
The two met once more in Barry’s Bay before Joey visited Lexi in Kingsville as a “friend”. The two wouldn’t start officially “dating” until one day Joey realized that he had never asked Lexi on a date!
The day after their first date, Joey brought his new girlfriend to his brother’s wedding. “How long have you two been dating?” A groomsman asked. “Two days”, the couple replied. “You asked a girl you’ve been dating for two days to your brother’s wedding!?”
From that point on, the two would use any time off they had to meet each other, exploring castles, ruins and small towns together and even flying in a biplane over Ottawa!
When Lexi moved to Ottawa to work at Maryvale as a teacher, their relationship got to blossom further. And the two were colleagues again!
The pandemic would separate the two for much longer than expected. Seventy-one days to be exact, but who’s counting? Joey had purchased a ring in February, and was planning to propose when Lexi came back after March break. March break ended up taking a lot longer than expected…
Finally in June, amidst a pandemic, the two visited waterfalls and a mountain in Oka where they arrived at the height of Calvary, a path made by Quebecois monks and, after saying a full rosary, Joey got down on one knee and proposed. She said yes.
Since that day the happy couple have been getting ready for their wedding, but they’d always been preparing for marriage. The two are in awe of the beauty of matrimony and study its ways like they are trying to get PhDs. That’s because marriage is for life, and the spouse is the first person after the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, before even yourself.
Now we come closer and closer to that magical day where Christ, through his vicar, will institute the two as one flesh in marriage, and they can devote themselves to mutual sacrifice.
