Joe Tomlinson

Joe is Professor of Administrative Law at King's College London and Distinguished Global Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on the empirical study of administrative law and justice across a range of policy sectors. He also researches the development of administrative law in relation to artificial intelligence and digitalisation in government. In 2023, he was awarded the Leverhulme Prize in Law.

Outside of King's College, Joe is a Member of the Academic Panel at Blackstone Chambers. His previous external roles include serving as Chair of the Administrative Justice Council's Academic Panel (in the Judicial Office), as an ESRC Parliamentary Academic Fellow in the House of Commons, and as Research Director of the Public Law Project. His research has been widely used in courts (including the UK Supreme Court), in Parliament, and in government.

Joe currently serves as an Articles Editor for the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies, as well as on several other editorial committees. He has held visiting positions around the world, including as Senior Research Scholar at Yale Law School.

He studied law at the University of Manchester, where he earned an LLB and PhD (as President's Scholar). He was called to the Bar by Middle Temple (as Queen Mother's Scholar).
