The first lab we completed was tempering:
In this lab, we started by prepared 6 steel samples, by cleaning them with acetone to remove any contaminations that would effect them during the heat treatment process.
Cleaning samples with acetone:
Then we set the kiln to the lowest needed temperature that the first sample required (in this case being 350 degrees), then placed the sample in there for 15 minutes. We repeated this process for all 6 samples, varying only the temperature of the kiln for each one.
Removing samples from the kiln:
Final product:
The purpose of the lab was to heat treat different sample of steel at different temperature to see the difference in color after the heat treatment process. The color variations are due the oxidation that occurs when we heat treat metals to specific temperatures.
(The one on the far left was not heat treated at all for comparison)
