The pen building lab.
In class we did something known as "The Pen Building Lab". This was an exercise for implementing lean principles in an assembly line process.
We started with a bunch of disassembled pens, and having 3 operators for our system, we then laid out different assembly steps in 3 main areas. In attempt to level load the system, we started moving and shifting things around until we created a decent flow. This of course leads to a faster, and more efficient process over all.
After that, we started implementing 2-second lean, such as labeling things, drawing pictures of each process step, and "fixing what bugs you".
We also created metrics, before, and after we implemented 2-second lean. In the dry erase board below, we wrote down our times, number of defects, and the little improvements along the way (aka 2-second lean).
