Over the past two years, I’ve completed over 750 hours of service as an AmeriCorps member, working with patients in our school clinic, at various rotation sites, and within the community. In the school clinic, I treated a wide range of patients—some with healthy mouths and others with advanced periodontal disease. My rotation sites included the Rose Park Clinic, CBC Clinic, and Utah Partners for Health, where I spent over 50 hours at each location providing dental hygiene services.
I also participated in numerous community outreach events, including the Discover Card Kohl’s Event, CARE Resource Fair, Give Kids a Smile, Day of the Dead Fair, and many others. Beyond clinical work, I gave blood, volunteered at the food bank, and helped assemble hygiene kits for those in need.
When we were first told about the required service hours each semester, I’ll admit—I was a little overwhelmed. With everything already on our plates, it felt like just another demand. But after attending my first event, the Discover Card Kohl’s Event, my perspective completely shifted. That day, I saw several children with severe dental decay, some in pain from cavities on every tooth—and it truly broke my heart. It opened my eyes to how many people in our own community are in need of care and how even small acts of service can make a real impact.
From that point on, I was eager to sign up for any service opportunity I could. These experiences taught me so much and have been some of the most meaningful parts of my journey. I’m truly grateful for the chance to give back and grow through these opportunities.
