Golla, Job. “Final Research Proposal: Public Perception of a Major News Event Based on Political Ideology.” BIS 300 C. Interdisciplinary Inquiry, Professor Denise Vaughan, Fall 2021.
Golla is proposing a research study that goes into how one would react to a news story depending on the news network that they watch. The paper itself includes the justification of the research, the question, thesis statement, preview of the research, and methodology. Golla was able to create a plan to test a group of 50,000 people of various backgrounds and ideologies and have them watch three different videos of news sources discussing Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the national anthem and will test which video will bring the most reaction on social media.
This artifact is significant to me because this was one of my first projects in IAS and this was a subject that I wanted to go deeper about as it intersects many of my interests in media and sports. It was a topic and idea that I was able to create and make a study. It was a quarter long study I was able to propose in 12 pages along with creating graphics and diagrams.
Golla, Job., Baerg, Mia., Gruenemay, Phillip., & San, Chantharoth. “Monopolizing Media Podcast.” BISMCS 333 A. Media and Communication Studies, Professor Amoshaun Toft, Winter 2022.
Golla talks with Baerg and other co-hosts in a podcast for UWave Radio about how social media algorithms and media ownership of news services affects the public sphere. The hosts also discuss how media consolidation affects content diversity and how Tom and Jerry, product placement, and Disney play a part in what we see, watch, and listen to. They also looked at how companies like AT&T and platforms like Facebook play a part as well.
This was one of my first contributions to student media as well as using my voice for the campus radio station, UWave Radio. It also was my first time using all of the equipment, working with other co-hosts, and do the editing for the podcast which was a great experience.
Golla, Job. “Audio Interview Package with D. Kal.” BISMCS 472 C. Advanced Media Production Workshop, Professor Amoshaun Toft, Spring 2022.
Golla was able to conduct a 15 minute interview with Dilara Kal, a member of the Bothell Beats club to discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected student life on campus and how that is affecting the clubs on campus. Golla was able to arrange, research and prepare questions as well as asking follow up questions during the interview. Golla was also able to edit the audio and create an audio package for multiple formats.
I wanted to include this piece because this was one of my favorite interviews I did. I was able to get a lot more of an idea from how students are feeling from this project overall. I also was able to clip together the more prominent parts of the interview and introduced the topic in the beginning. I thought the interview was really insightful.
Golla, Job. “Video Interview Cut with H. Linder.” BISMCS 240 A. Working with Video, Professor Samuel Yum, Fall 2022.
Golla was able to conduct an interview using video production, using multiple camera angles, and practing lighting in a controlled space. Golla did a quick interview with Hans Linder, a student at UW Bothell discussing how he’s turned his hobby of computer building into a career and what sparked his interest. Afterwards, he was able to collect the footage and edited it in post-production using the Final Cut Pro software. Golla also included b-roll footage in the final cut.
This is an artifact I wanted to include because I wanted to showcase the variety of interviews I was able to accomplish in multiple formats. I felt like I was able to learn and improve on my skills in editing and how to set up equipment during production and being able to work with others.
Golla, Job. “Final Narrative Short: Icy Chryst.” BISMCS 240 A. Working with Video, Professor Samuel Yum, Fall 2022.
Golla was able to write, shoot, and edit a dramatic narrative short of his own for this piece. It is called The Icy Chryst and it involves a character, in which Golla plays, wakes up and realizes that the expensive jewelry that he inherited go missing and goes around looking for it. Golla was able to utilize camera equipment, audio equipment, and editing software Final Cut Pro in post production. He also created the script for this narrative short and was able to use interior and exterior shots during filming.
I wanted to add this artifact because I wanted to be able to show what I can do in such a limited amount of time. I was a one man show during this project mostly because I wanted to challenge myself as well as having more creative control with the story and being able to do everything myself in every aspect showed my creativity, resilience and work to be proud of and remember.
Golla, Job. “Feature Podcast Story: Erasing the Stigma.” BISMCS 343 B. Media Production Workshop, Professor Amoshaun Toft, Fall 2022.
Golla was able to create a feature story on the stigma on mental health and even though in recent years, there have been strides on the issue, has there really been progress for people to get help, specifically with students in schools. Are schools doing a good job adjusting to students' needs? This consists of an approximately 5 minute feature story in a news magazine format. Golla was able to build skills to develop more in intereviewing, editing, research, storytelling, writing, speaking, and sound mixing.
I wanted to include this in my list of artifacts because I really feel that my skills have really improved over the year and I wanted to include my progress here. I think that this was one of my more well rounded projects that was able to utilize many of my skills that I have picked up over the course of the year.
Golla, Job. “Husky Herald Feature Article Story: How Can You Improve Your State of Mind?.” BISMCS 343 B. Media Production Workshop, Professor Amoshaun Toft, Fall 2022.
Golla was able to write for the Husky Herald campus newspaper as a contributor. Golla’s role as a health and wellness contributor included creating stories that focused on coordinating with wellness organizations to write helpful and relevant health-related content for students. He decided to focus on stress and anxiety and what are the ways to manage it. Golla interviewed Jo Blue, the Health and Wellness Coordinator on campus for more insight on how to help students as well as researching statistics and resources students can go to. The article ended up in the December 2022 issue of the Husky Herald.
For me, I really was proud of the work I did in this article, and for it to end up on the campus newspaper meant a lot to me. It felt good writing about subjects that my peers might be going through and being able to provide a service to them. It is also a good experience to be able to connect with other members of the campus community.
Golla, Job. “Final News Report: How Has the UW Food Pantry Adjusted to Meet Students Needs.” BIS 204 A. Intro to Journalism, Professor Min Tang, Spring 2023.
Golla was able to create a news report focusing on a concrete story pertaining to the UW Food Pantry and how they are able to accommodate underserved students and knowing how they navigate with an influx of students over the past couple of years post-pandemic. Golla was able to do research on the pantry as well as the data showing how many students are dealing with food security challenges, interviewing the student manager of the pantry as well as students who use the pantry. Golla was able to gather and compile information to produce a news story.
I added this to my artifacts because this was one of the pieces that focused on research and prep before writing the story. I was able to be in the field and interviewing people that are comfortable sharing their experience. This is also one of my recent pieces that I wanted to include here.
