Teaching

Summary

I am passionate about teaching and have a penchant for applied finance courses. Coaching and tutoring students have been an integral part of my personal development, having shaped my communication and leadership skills. I have always emphasized the preparation of new class materials and the choice of new teaching strategies, given my keen interest in pedagogical issues.

I have gained extensive experience as a teaching assistant, in-class grader, and assistant supervisor for master students, both at Nova SBE and at the Imperial College Business School. In particular, I have taught banking and applied corporate finance courses and supported students in Equity Research and Private Equity dissertation projects. Before my Ph.D., I have also been exposed to teaching at the undergraduate level.

As my CV illustrates, my teaching experience ranges broadly from core finance courses to M&A deal-making workshops and policy-related subjects. I am confident that I will be able to build in-depth, up-to-date applied course structures at graduate level, in corporate finance or private equity subjects. I would be ready to supervise master students, both in more theoretical or in case-based dissertation projects. Financial supervision and corporate strategy courses can also be taught given suitable preparation.

Methods and materials

My teaching record has exposed me to a great diversity of course formats. I have become familiar with several teaching methods and materials. Here is brief summary of my teaching tools:

Finance case studies: I have prepared and taught original tutorials on corporate finance business cases (e.g. HBS, Insead). I have also assessed class participation and group presentations in core lectures of applied corporate finance, where I have co-lectured with senior instructors. My courses have covered an extensive list of financial policies and multiple deal structures, such as leveraged buyouts, project finance contracts, equity offerings, financial restructuring transactions, spin-offs or carve-outs.

Financial supervision, banking examples: I have co-lectured sessions with group presentations on regional and national examples of supervision problems and policies, banking scandals and monetary policy effects. I have assisted students in the choice and development of current topics in these fields.

Financial data: On several instances, I supported students in gathering and analysing stock market data, in introductory finance courses. At a more advanced level, I have gathered equity research data, both at the firm and industry level, and supported students in their use, for transaction-design purposes. In particular, I have given intermediate feedback on master dissertations, both on financial models and mock presentations.

M & A simulations: I have managed interactive deal-making simulations, where students play the role of a transaction party, and assessed students' performances in these games.

In-class problem solving: As a grader, I have recently taught special tutorials in introductory finance subjects, where I have solved investments and corporate finance standard problems. I have also been engaged in the writing of coursework and practise exercises. Before my Ph.D, I have also taught statistics and international finance subjects.

Computer-assisted lecturing: I have taught intensive training sessions, showing software tools and practical applications, in Microsoft Excel certification modules.

Teaching philosophy

I believe that education relies much more on a learning process than on any teaching process that we may conceive. The teacher's role is to provide students with tools, insights and methods that will increase their ability and motivation to learn. Should a teacher dismiss the key role of individual learning methods, the largest part of his role can be lost: guiding and assisting students' own study.

Thus, whenever I am given the opportunity to develop original homework, I aim at excelling in those tasks, remaining wary of easy pre-made solutions, with standard problems. Whenever possible, I try to teach topics that can linked to students' coursework. At different times, I seek to provide input and feedback to their work, targetting a sequential learning path.

I insist on being available to help if students have questions, in particular prior to coursework submission and in exam preparations. I have always carried out regular office hours, both as teaching assistant and grader. I have often found myself answering students' questions by e-mail in the evening. I put great emphasis on providing tailored solutions to students' bureaucratic problems and practical concerns.

I am strongly committed to speaking openly to students about assessment methods and their performances. Nonetheless, I remain at all times aware of the need to protect school's policies and guidelines and to induce respectful attitudes that will prove essential in students' future endeavours.
