While teaching and tutoring, I like to explain the process of learning a language. There are four skills in Spanish: reading in Spanish, listening in Spanish, writing in Spanish, and speaking in Spanish. The first two are input and the last two are output. To learn a language you need a lot of input, then you are able to output. It is a slow and steady process - just like toddlers learn to speak their first language. Reading and writing tend to be "easier" skills because you are able to process the language in your head and can usually go at your own pace. Listening and speaking is generally more difficult; you must process and understand much quicker and, honestly, nerves can get the better of students.
I also like to get a good idea of the student's approach to learning via Gardner's Multiple Intelligences. I present multiple ways to study vocabulary and grammar concepts - such as written worksheets, computer activities, manipulative/tactile practices, and reading passages.
Last I want to modify the age old saying - practice does not make perfect. If you are going to put in the time and effort to learn a new language (or anything!), be sure to practice the correct thing. Your brain is an incredible muscle, so be sure to practice what you want to become permanent, and if you're not sure, please reach out so I can help!
