Research Interests
John NA Brown is a polymath, with degrees in the Arts, Social Sciences, Education, Applied Science, and Engineering. Following the forested path set by Mark Weiser, he combines these perspectives to make interaction with simple devices and complex systems more suitable for those of us who perceive the world through a human nervous system. “Anthropology-Based Computing” was the focus of his first two books with Springer, and drove his work on advancing practical applications of the Cocktail Party Effect in both Smart Homes and Smart Phones. He has spent nearly a decade modelling means by which to make AIs self-reflective, thus improving their ability to adapt and to interact with others. In an attempt to add scientific rigour to the vaguely-defined industrial practices of UX Research and Design, he has created a periodic table of heuristics and other tools that support the identification, mapping, measurement, and general quantification of qualitative data. He champions aspirational communication about science and engineering, as discussed in his third book with Springer, “Set Phasers to Teach,” and his ongoing seminars on the neuropsychology of video games. Having worked in Government, Industry, and Academia in half-a-dozen countries, most recently in California’s Bay Area as a consulting researcher for companies like Amazon and YouTube, Dr Brown has recently taken up a post as lecturer and research team leader in the School of Computing at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland.
