The history of Audrey II dates back to the show's original production in 1982, when the character was first brought to life by puppet designer and builder Martin P. Robinson. Robinson's design was inspired by the carnivorous Venus Flytrap plant, with a gaping mouth and menacing, toothy grin. The puppet was operated by a team of four puppeteers, who controlled its movements and lip-synced to the pre-recorded voice of the character. The design was a hit with audiences and critics alike, and helped to establish Audrey II as one of the most iconic characters in musical theatre history. Since then, numerous productions have sought to recreate the magic of the original puppet, while others have taken a more experimental approach to the design.
