Primary Responsibilities and Projects:

At Miller's Merry Manor I completed an internship program that was ran similar to an administrator in training program. Although it wasn't as in depth as an actual AIT program I still got to see how the facility operated. I shadowed multiple department heads throughout my internship. These departments included the administrator, social services, nursing, dietary, and housekeeping. I was with the administrator more than anybody and I got to see what it was like to run a long term care facility. A few things I did during my internship was collect weights of residents, perform resident assessments, and update and organize every contract that the facility has.

Internship Learning Objectives:

One of my learning objectives was to communicate with all departments involved in the facility and I met that objective very easily with how the internship was set up. My second objective was to gain healthcare experience and transfer my newly learned skills to my next position after my internship. I gained a lot from shadowing the administrator and I got to see all of what goes on behind the scenes in a long term care facility and I believe that will help me in my next position. Another one of my objectives was to be able to work with a team and gain advice from the staff. I didn't necessarily work with a team, but the one on one work with the department managers and the advice that they gave me helped me achieve this goal. My fourth objective was to experience long term care and compare it to my other health-related interests. I achieved this goal easily. I never knew how much I would like long term care until I started this internship and that is where I can see myself in the future. My final objective was to learn about the types of HIT that the facility used and this was the only goal that I didn't achieve during my internship.

Personal Development:

One skill that I further developed during my time at Miller's Merry Manor was my adaptability. I went into this internship with zero healthcare experience and I had to adapt to the long-term care environment. I also further developed my team communication skills because the department managers have to be in constant contact with each other to ensure that the facility is running as efficiently as possible. A contribution that I made during my internship was creating updated and organized binders which included every single contract that the facility has. Some areas for growth for me include my time-management and organization skills since those are very important when it comes to being an administrator.

Academic Connections:

The classroom played an important role during my internship. The best course that prepared me for this internship was my long-term care course since this was a long-term care facility and the course introduced me to a lot of rules and regulations that long-term care has. Professionalism was another course that prepared me for this internship because it taught me how to be a professional in the workplace and how to make connections with colleagues that can help me advance further into my career. Nothing that I learned in these courses contradicted what I learned and saw during my experience. The only thing that was different was all of the rules and regulations since they are always changing and the COVID-19 pandemic had a lot to do with most changes.
