J&K has undertaken the installation of smart meters in three phases under the PMDP/RDSS schemes. The first phase, which started in 2022, stands completed with the installation of 1.5 lakh smart meters in Jammu & Srinagar cities. The second phase, covering 5.50 lakh smart meters, is under implementation, while the third phase, comprising the remaining 14 lakh smart meters, is commencing soon and is targeted for completion by 2026, thereby accomplishing 100% smart metering in J&K.

It is a characteristic feature of smart prepaid meters to provide up-to-theminute data on your energy usage. As a result, your consumption is being calculated and billed on a daily basis to ensure accuracy and transparency. By receiving bills daily, you have more control over your energy budget, thereby eliminating sudden spikes in your expenses at the end of the month.

According to the guidelines set by the Government of India, the transition to smart meters is mandatory, and non-smart options are not allowed. These guidelines are in place to ensure a more efficient and technologically advanced energy management system. Smart meters offer multiple advantages, including accurate billing, effective energy management, and seamless integration with modern utility infrastructure. Embracing smart meters will ultimately contribute to a more streamlined and effective energy consumption experience.

In most cases, high bills are being received due to unpaid legacy dues of consumers and not due to any changes in billing after the smart meter installation. To facilitate easier bill payment, the department has introduced the Amnesty Scheme, where consumers have the option to separate legacy dues from their monthly bill. The Amnesty scheme, available until November 2023, also offers a waiver of interest accrued due to late payment surcharges. Another common reason for high billing is presumably due to mid-month installation of smart meters, where the additional days of the previous month are included in the subsequent month. In such cases, a collective up-to-date bill is being received as opposed to the previous monthly billing system.

Smart meters are connected through a web-based monitoring system which will help to reduce commercial losses of utilities, enhance revenues and serve as an important tool in power sector reforms. EESL business model to roll out smart meters is revamping the current manual system of revenue collection which leads to low billing and poor collection efficiencies.

As on date, EESL has installed over 35.75 lakh smart meters in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Bihar, Rajasthan and Andaman under this programme. Apart from this M/S Intellismart has installed 3.03 Lac Smart Meters in the State of Assam.

If your meters have just been fitted you may not see this reflected on your online account straight away, we usually advise it can take up to 6 weeks from the date the meters were replaced. This is due to the fact that we need to confirm the final meter readings from your old meters before we can amend the details and start billing you on the readings received automatically from your sparkling new smart meters. You might notice a pause to your usual monthly billing during this time too.

We I had a smart meter installed by EDF in our second home and it IMMEDIATELY on my online EDF account. I was able to monitor the smart meter readings IMMEDIATELY from my phone. I just think that OVO / SSE are complete rubbish if it takes up to 6 weeks for the readings to appear on my online account. I am seriously thinking of switching to another company because I am losing confidence in OVO and their customer service. I see absolutely no reason why it would take so long for smart meter readings to appear on my account.

Regarding the hours of power supply to consumers, the spokesperson conveyed that smart metering is under implementation in mission mode and focus is on ensuring uninterrupted and regular power supply in areas saturated with smart meters, while also curbing losses.

In areas without smart metering, the department is sustaining the same number of power supply hours as maintained during the previous year. Moreover, there is a curtailment schedule in effect which is diligently being published to prevent any inconvenience to the public. The spokesman further emphasized that contrary to the mention of Hammams in the news item, electricity remains the primary and preferred source for heating, with people using crude nichrome wires or non-thermostat fitted heaters which remain operational throughout the day. e24fc04721
