The Geneva School District website outlines the Curriculum Frameworks for each subject area at the elementary level. The writing curriculum, Lucy Calkins, was adopted over 10 years ago. The district is in the midst of restructuring the reading curriculum. A committee is piloting various programs, and all aspects of reading instruction are being considered. Eureka Math was adopted over 10 years ago in response to the adoption of the IL State Standards. Mystery Science was adopted a few years ago, and this year teachers began using the TCI Social Studies Alive digital curriculum.
As a teacher evaluator and member of the student services team, it is critical that I remain involved in all curricular areas. It is important to understand Tier 1 standards and goals when determining if a student is in need of Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention.
Second Step is our social-emotional curriculum. The Building Culture Committee members have collaborated to enhance and expand social-emotional learning at Williamsburg. Together, we created a social-emotional digital notebook that includes the Second Step lessons for each grade level. In addition, sub-committees met regularly to enrich the curriculum with growth mindset and Leader in Me lessons.
I utilize the Zones of Regulation strategies to support students who struggle with emotional regulation. Tools such as expected/unexpected, brain in the group/body in the group, size of the problem, and mindfulness are used to support emotional regulation.
As a member of the ASSIST Team, I am Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certified. I attend refresher courses each year to ensure I am up to date on the latest interventions that are safe for students and staff. Prevention and de-escalation are the most important part of the process. Proper physical techniques must be used as a last resort when students are exhibiting harm to themselves or harm to others. I created the above PowerPoint for lunchroom staff and instructional assistants. It is important they have the necessary skills and strategies to de-escalate behavior.
Teachers are reminded to review school rules regularly. As Student Assistance Coordinator, I train and support the lunchroom staff with student behavior. I also assist the principal regularly with discipline concerns. I work closely with parents and students to resolve issues quickly and equitably.
