Today we will be taking a look at an article titled “ Biden wants to fix racial inequality. Mental health access is an important place to start." This article was written by Dr. Ashwin Vasan on February. 17, 2021. We are going to be assessing this article's Rhetorical Analysis and also learning about the importance of mental health in the black and brown communities. This article is going to inform people about the lack of mental health care professionals in rural areas and in areas with people of color. Vasan explains that before the pandemic people of color were not receiving the same access to treatments of depression, serious mental health conditions , anxiety and substance use. This article also gives examples of mental health impacts and how they might be unidentified. If these mental health impacts aren't being talked about with healthcare professionals then people of color can be misdiagnosed. Vansan also talks about how if these health impacts are not addressed it will continue to make it hard for black and brown people to get the proper health care they need. This article also talks about how people that work directly with community members should be trained on de-escalation, empathetic and safety techniques.
