Oceana is the largest international organization dedicated solely to marine conservation. Their primary goal is to protect and restore our oceans through policy change, and so far, they have protected almost 4 million square miles of ocean! Some of their largest areas of advocacy include responsible fishing, pollution, and habitat & species protection. With a 4-star 100% rating from Charity Navigator, it is a reputable and transparent organization.
Our oceans are integral not only to the survival of marine species, but also to us. Oceans regulate climate patterns, provide transportation, and supply us with items for medicinal, economic, and nutritional purposes. It's estimated that around 740 million people (~9% of the earth's population) directly rely on the ocean for their livelihoods.
Additionally, despite our technological advancements, there is still no accurate estimation for just how many species reside in the oceans. According to the NOAA, around 91% of species have yet to be classified, and more than 80% of our oceans are unmapped, unobserved, and unexplored. In 2025 alone, over 800 new species were discovered!
Oceana was created in 2001, and since then they have celebrated over 325 victories, including a New Jersey law limiting single-use plastics at restaurants and in takeout food orders (Jan 2026), The National Marine Fisheries Service including protections for deep-sea coral gardens on Sur Ridge (Dec 2025), and Spain approving 5 new marine protected areas (and 1 area of special importance for birds) (Oct 2025).
