I have focused my work in environmental and resource economics on two topics: marine management and climate change.
As an angler myself, we all know that only structures hold fish. For those heading offshore without a dynamic sonar, the most likely spots to fish are oil rigs and reefs. Over the past few decades, the removal of oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico has significantly impacted offshore fishing. So, should we simply remove these oil rigs, or repurpose them into structures that hold fish—like artificial reefs?
To examine this issue, we utilized geospatial revealed preference (RP) data and stated preference (SP) data from a choice experiment. This represents a beautiful integration of SP-RP methodologies, addressing an important question for anglers and marine ecosystems alike!
This is an on-going project with Dr. Kashi Kafle and Dr. Bruce McCarl's team that is still in progress.
