Film Review

‚Keeping mum‘ is a delightful black comedy of a happy family whose life changed after hiring a housekeeper. It is set in a small village called Little Wallop. The film’s director is Niall Johnson and the cast includes Rowan Atkinson, also known as Mr. Bean, who plays the role of the Vicar, Walter Goodfellow. Kristin Scott Thomas is the wife of the Vicar and a mother of two children that are played by Tamsin Egerton and Toby Parkes.

This movie starts with a flashback of a young pregnant woman caught by the police for having two dead bodies in her luggage while taking the train. The story goes on in the village Little Wallop, where a woman, Gloria Goodfellow, lives with her husband and two children. She’s really unhappy and lonely because her husband is a busy man. So, she starts an affair with Lance, who is also her golf trainer. After a while, she and her husband hire an old lady as their housekeeper to bring them company and help them with the household. Little did they know that this mysterious housekeeper would turn their life upside down. What is it about this housekeeper? How is Gloria’s affair with Lance going to develop?

This film is mainly about dark humour. It includes serious subjects but the director turned them into little dark jokes that will make you laugh. The actors, especially Maggie Smith, the old housekeeper, give believable and fabulous performances. The movie is definitely not boring but indeed very interesting and funny. It shows the not so pretty sides of an unhappy family. ‘Keeping mum’ is well worth seeing, do not miss it! It will make you laugh so much that your tummy will hurt. Besides, it also teaches you things like: “Don’t cheat on the person you decided to spend the rest of your life with.”
