Professional Bio

  • 2019/09 -- present: Chief Researcher, Huawei Tech., Hong Kong
  • 2017/05 -- 2019/08: Associate Professor of Mathematics (tenured), Clarkson University, USA
  • 2012/07 -- 2017/04: Assistant Professor of Mathematics (tenure-track), Clarkson University, USA
  • 2010/03 -- 2012/06: Postdoc at Northwestern University and Princeton University, USA

Jie Sun received his BS in Physics and (dual-degree) in Finance from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2006, and PhD in Mathematics from Clarkson University (USA) in 2009. He subsequently received postdoctoral training at Northwestern University and Princeton University, after which he joined the Department of Mathematics at Clarkson University as a faculty member in 2012, initially as an Assistant Professor and promoted to tenured Associate Professor in 2017 shortly after winning Clarkson's faculty research award that year. During his time at Clarkson, he was affiliated also with the Physics Department, Computer Science Department and the Clarkson Center for Compelx Systems Science, holding multiple research grants, advising graduate students and postdocs in Math, Physics, ECE and serving as the faculty advisor of Clarkson's SIAM Student Chapter. He was a Visiting Professor at Northwestern University (USA) in summer 2017 and at Fudan University (as a Distinguished Fudan Scholar) and Tongji University during the 2018-2019 academic year.

Dr. Sun joined Huawei Tech's Hong Kong Research Center as a Chief Researcher in September 2019, leading an effort to define and tackle fundamental theoretical problems in nonlinear dynamics, network optimization, machnine learning and inverse problems. He has broad research interests in applied mathematics and statistical physics, drawn to the fascinating role they play in applications. His publications include those in Physical Review Letters, SIAM series, and Nature Communications. He has co-organized over ten international scientific workshops and symposiums, co-edited three special issues, refereed journals for several prestigious journals, is a member of SIAM, APS, Network Science Society, and an Editor of Chaos.

Teaching

Over his professional years, Dr. Sun has taught a variety of courses in Mathematics, which include:

  • Calculus series (I-III)
  • Advanced Calculus (aka., basic version of Real Analysis)
  • Linear Algebra series (Elementary, Applied, and Abstract versions)
  • Foundations (a course about mathematical proofs)
  • Complex Analysis
  • Differential Equations
  • Numerical Methods
  • Fouries Series and Boundary Value Problems (PDEs)
  • Seminar in Applied Mathematics
  • Seminars in Nonlinear Processes.

Sun's teaching focuses on developing intuition and inspiring interest, which has proven to be most effective in a small-class setting where student-teaching interaction is promoted. Flipped learning and project-based learning are among his favorite methods, which most students seem to have loved.
