Jie is a PhD student working on the gap between the computer-predicted performance of buildings at the design stage and actual performance in the usage stage in architecture at the Pennsylvania State University, affiliated with the Hamer Center for Community Design. The project goal is to understand how to ensure the generated built environments comply with sustainable targets in practice and shift the focus from computer prediction performance to actual performance. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques will be used in this project to achieve the goal. On this account, she has completed the accumulation of knowledge and skills in the application of ML technology, has taken training in MATLAB just prior to beginning her doctoral studies at Penn State and several classes in Statistics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) as a matriculated student.
Passionate about building energy efficiency and sustainability, Jie completed her master’s studies in Building Sustainable Technologies at the University of Nottingham School of Architecture and the Built Environment with a thesis focused on retrofitting existing housing in the United Kingdom for improved sustainability metrics and energy efficiency. In the following eight years, she started a professional career consulting on the sustainability of large-scale building and planning projects, contributing her expertise in building and site performance assessment and simulations. Through this experience and related training, Jie Li established expertise in computer software and shared this knowledge with students, instructing architecture graduates and undergraduates on applications and techniques for computational drafting, modeling, and graphic communication and visualization.
