No other subject follows students as persistently as mathematics. For most students, their long learning journeys before college are accompanied by math. Many students come to college with an already formed conclusion, that math is difficult and is only for smart people. This probably creates a unique challenge for mathematics teaching compared with other departments. However, I believe that conclusion is almost always wrong, or even irrelevant for junior level courses. The center of my teaching is to help students realize that math doesn’t require extra intellectual ability, and that it can be approachable and interesting with proper methods.
