Photos that I have taken during fieldwork in the US and China
While I was in China, I had the chance to meet a lot of people from transnational families. Immigration was an innate behavior that existed in all families - either someone from the family was abroad or knew relatives/friends who were abroad. It was a norm. It was part of their culture. I got to interview around 25 individuals who were part of this transnational process and I am sure if I stayed longer, I would have had the chance to interivew many more. The interviews would range from 1 hour to most of the time, 2-3 hours. Some of my interviews even had two parts. Through the process of them sharing about their and their famlies' stories -- emotions came in and out. I saw men and women being vulnerable and sharing the stories that they have never told to anyone. Tears, laughter, an honest discussion of what it all means.
At the end, a few of them shared how healing it was.
During my field work in China, I probably ate more fishballs than anything else during my time there. Most families made their own fishballs and took a lot of pride in them. They would always cook a batch of them when I was coming to see them. It was their love language. There were so many times when they would try to give me a whole bag of fishballs when I was leaving to go home.
The little clementines were in season when I was there during the winter/spring of 2019. One of my families knew how much I loved them and would always buy a huge bag of them everytime I came to see them. They really knew how to love through food.
Train stations in China are quite a wonder.
