In 2018, the government of Taiwan launched the Bilingual 2030 Policy with a clear vision: to create a society where both Mandarin Chinese and English are part of daily life. This important step reflects Taiwan’s commitment to preparing its young people for the challenges and opportunities of a globalized world.
The bilingual policy focuses on strengthening English education while valuing Taiwan’s own rich culture and traditions. Schools across the nation, including public elementary and junior high schools, have introduced bilingual programs supported by the Ministry of Education. These programs use approaches like CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and team teaching with local and foreign teachers, making English learning more natural and meaningful.
The goals of the policy are clear:
Build a learning environment where students use both Mandarin and English.
Develop students’ confidence and communication skills in English.
Prepare Taiwan’s young people to become global citizens who can study, travel, and work internationally.
Encourage cultural exchange while keeping Taiwanese identity strong.
By 2030, Taiwan hopes to see a society where bilingual communication is part of everyday life, giving students more opportunities and a stronger voice in the global community.
