Bark beetle outbreaks of western North America
Here is a review of remote sensing of insects and diseases of the western United States, published as a USDA Forest Service General Technical Report (2024).
Here is Version 4.1 (March 2025) of the gridded mortality area data set based on aerial surveys of the western United States, now updated to include a) 1997-2023; b) additional biotic agents of mortality beyond bark beetles, and drought-caused mortality; c) a similar data set for USFS Region 6 (Washington and Oregon) for 1947-2023. The Andrus et al. paper (Forest Ecology and Management, 2025) describes the methods and an analysis of outbreak characteristics. Version 4.1 is a slight update to Version 4.0; see the folder named "version_4.0_4.1_differences".
See here for a set of Powerpoint slides (42 Mb) illustrating the extent, causes (including climate change), and consequences of bark beetle outbreaks (note: emphasis on my research).
