Neural circuits for volitional modulation of breathing
Even when we are asleep or under anesthesia, we never stop breathing. From the moment we are born until the moment we “take our last breath,” breathing persists as an automatic rhythm essential for sustaining life. Remarkably, however, we can also consciously alter the depth of our breathing, adjust the duration of inhalation and exhalation, and even hold our breath simply by intending to do so.
Although studies focusing on the brainstem have greatly advanced our understanding of the mechanisms that generate and regulate automatic breathing, the neural circuit mechanisms underlying voluntary control of breathing remain poorly understood.
Coordination of breathing and behavior
Sneezing and coughing protect the airways, while breathing must be briefly suspended during the swallowing of food and liquids. Sighs recur approximately every five minutes to help maintain normal alveolar function, and vocalization requires the precise coordination of exhalation with vibration of the vocal cords. To carry out these diverse reflexive and voluntary behaviors, the breathing pattern must be coordinated with the sequence of behaviors. The neural circuit mechanisms that coordinate breathing with behavior have only recently begun to be uncovered, and many fundamental questions remain unanswered.
Physiology of affective disorders
The brain and body of vertebrates are not separate functional units, but together form a single, tightly interconnected system. Emotional experiences that arise in situations beneficial or threatening to survival extend beyond subjective feelings and are accompanied by changes in a wide range of bodily functions and physiological states. Dysregulation of these body–brain interactions is closely associated with the symptoms of various neuropsychiatric disorders, including anxiety and panic disorders, depression, and schizophrenia.
Our laboratory, which specializes in breathing research, has a particular interest in panic disorder. Hyperventilation is commonly observed during panic attacks of patients with respiratory panic disorder, and these patients are known to exhibit heightened sensitivity to carbon dioxide inhalation and changes in acid–base balance of blood. By investigating how genetic and environmental risk factors for panic disorder disrupt the brain circuits that regulate breathing, we aim to uncover the neural circuit mechanisms underlying the onset of panic attacks and heightened chemosensitivity.

Microbiome-breathing-brain axis
Through collaborations with faculty members in our department who specialize in microbiome research, we aim to investigate how bodily microbial communities influence breathing and how these effects, in turn, shape brain function.
Evolution of respiratory neural circuits
The ability to breathe air with lungs did not emerge overnight. Over the course of vertebrate evolution, respiratory strategies diversified across different descendant lineages. This evolutionary history remains visible today—from aquatic vertebrates that rely primarily on gills, to lungfish and amphibians capable of using both gills and lungs, and ultimately to terrestrial vertebrates that obtain far greater amounts of oxygen from the air. In collaboration with U.S.-based researchers specializing in ecology, we aim to compare the respiratory neural circuits of species with distinct modes of breathing and thereby trace how these circuits have emerged through evolutionary history.
