Pick Márk

Mark Pick (1843-1892) was the founder of the biggest company in the Hungarian meat industry. His company is famous for inventing a special recipe to make Salami, a kind of sausage. They smoked and cured it in a cold place for a long time. This restricted the production for the winter, as there was no effective cooling method at the time, thus the name Winter Salami.

He was a religious Jew, and since his product mainly consisted of pork, he could never try it. He married the daughter of the rabbi of Lugos, named Katalin Weiß, and had four children.

After his death, his widow and later son took over and further expanded his business. He used his hard-earned money for the city and its people as well. He founded many local schools, the building of the new Synagogue of Szeged, and even a railway development.

Both him and his family rest here in the graveyard, however, as there was a custom of burying the dead in a chronological order, they lie in distant parts of it.
