Ahead of international flights resuming, Jetstar has begun bringing wide-body Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners out of storage for use on domestic flights around Australia! Lucky Jetstar passengers on select domestic flights to Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns and the Gold Coast are in for a nice upgrade over the regular Airbus A320 experience – in more ways than one.
Jetstar's Dreamliners are typically used for long-haul international flights, so they are configured with a 21-seat Business Class cabin at the front of the plane. But Jetstar does not sell Business Class tickets on these domestic flights. Instead, Business seats are available for anyone booked in Economy to choose from for as little as $32 extra (or for free with the Max Package)!
This guide explains how to get a cheap Jetstar Business Class seat upgrade on your next domestic flight...
Which Jetstar flights are operated by Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners?
First of all, you need to find a Jetstar flight operated by one of the long-haul Dreamliner aircraft. (Jetstar's A320 and A321 aircraft are not fitted with any Business Class seats.)
From now until the end of November, Jetstar will only schedule its Dreamliner on one Melbourne-Sydney rotation each day. These flights are:
From 1 December 2021, Jetstar will use Boeing 787s on two daily Melbourne-Sydney flights in each direction. These are JQ512 & JQ520 from Melbourne to Sydney, and JQ517 & JQ537 from Sydney to Melbourne.
From 17-31 December 2021, Jetstar will temporarily remove its Dreamliners from the Melbourne-Sydney route and use them on flights from Melbourne to the Gold Coast and Cairns.
But if you plan to travel during the summer holidays, there are many Jetstar routes where the Boeing 787 will appear! From 1 January to 26 March 2022, Jetstar 787s will appear on selected flights on the following routes:
Melbourne-Sydney
Melbourne-Cairns
Melbourne-Gold Coast
Sydney-Cairns
Sydney-Gold Coast

How to select a Jetstar Business Class seat
On domestic flights operated by Boeing 787s, Jetstar opens up Business Class seats in rows 1-3 to be selected as "extra legroom" seats. There is an additional fee to select this seat, but it is only slightly more expensive than the cost of an Economy exit row seat.
When booking your flight on the Jetstar website, simply select a seat in rows 1-3 when you are offered seat selection during the booking process! If seats are still available in the Business cabin, you can select a seat there. A seat selection fee will be added to the cost of your booking.
Alternatively, if you have already booked your flight, you can choose a seat when managing your booking online.
On a Sydney-Melbourne flight, for example, it costs just $32 extra to choose one of the Business Class seats. That is an absolute bargain!
On longer routes such as Melbourne-Cairns, the seat selection fee is a slightly higher – but still very reasonable – $45 per passenger.
Can I select my seat?
Yes, you can select your seat when you make your reservation. Choose an aisle or window seat, or sit in a row with friends and family. Fees may apply and seat selection is subject to availability.
Standard seats are our most affordable option. Sit in a group, in an aisle for a little more freedom, or a window seat for a view.
On some flights, standard seats are grouped into zones, arranged according to their position on the plane. Standard seat prices will vary slightly depending on the zone.
If you have a Starter Plus, Flex or Max package, you can choose any standard seat as part of your fare, subject to availability. If you have purchased a Business Class fare, you can choose any available Business Class seat.
For a little more than a standard seat, you can buy a forward seat, which should help you get on and off the flight more easily.
The front seats can be purchased separately or can be selected at no extra cost if you have purchased the Flex or Max package.
Our premium seats allow you to relax in comfort and are the best choice for long journeys.
Additional legroom seats can be purchased separately or can be selected at no extra cost as part of the Max package.
Extra legroom seats are located in the exit row of the aircraft, and to sit in this seat you must be able to meet the exit row requirements.

Can I purchase an extra seat?
Upgrading on Jetstar international flights
Yes you can. If you are an Economy Starter or Economy Starter Plus passenger, you will pay a fee to select an extra legroom seat.
Economy Starter Max passengers can choose extra legroom seats as part of their fare.
Seat selection is subject to availability.
Our extra legroom seats are located in the exit row of our aircraft. If you want to sit in the exit row you must:
If you have reserved an exit row seat, but think you will not be able to meet the additional requirements on the briefing card, you must request to be seated again. Cabin crew may not be able to determine whether you will be able to meet these requirements without your assistance.
If you don't need extra legroom seats, you can still make a regular seat selection when you make your reservation. Fees may apply.
Got a reservation? Go to Manage booking to purchase your extra legroom seat option
Paid seat requests are non-transferable and non-refundable. You can only transfer a seat request when you make an authorized name change on your reservation.
In the event of a flight disruption or schedule change, we will try to place you in the requested seat or its equivalent but we cannot guarantee that the seat will be available on your new flight.
You may also be required to move seats for operational reasons.
If you choose to change your flight, you will be offered an equivalent seat when you change, subject to availability. If an equivalent seat is not available, Jetstar will not provide a refund of the additional amount paid.
If you change your flight and a higher seat change fee applies, you must pay the difference.
