When I first arrived in Singapore as an international student, I feel shocked by seeing so many old people are still working. It is because my impression on Singapore was much larger from the images that the Singapore Government built on TV channels through the advertisement. People around me and I deeply believed that Singapore's elderlies were well-taken care by the Singapore government, as they consistently catered their services and reminded their citizens in their all-rounded daily lives.
Thus, I would like to found out more about the reasons behind them for working. During poly life, I have joined many volunteering events to bond with the elderly to know more from them. Besides, I have a strong inclination to old people and enjoy spending time with old folks since my grandparents brought me up from a young age.
Whenever I interacted with the old people, I will unconsciously feel empathy for them especially when they shared their unfortunate story but at the same time, I also reflect on myself not to fall into the same trap as them.
Thus, it was the beginning of why I carried on this social study and started this project. The project named Together, We Involve as I would like to spread awareness of preparation for facing an aging society in our young generation. This is the message that must be planted in everyone's mindset.
At first, I was struggled to choose the subjects between Global Studies 2 and Guided Learning. It was because I was also interested in diverse cultures related to one of the modules in Global Studies 2.
After thoughtful consideration, I chose Guided Learning for my subject taken as it provided a freedom platform for me to choose a topic and work on it to explore the areas that I was truly passionate about, the start of this project which is refining the proposal helped me to see the bigger picture of what I can do.
As we know, Guided Learning is an individual self-directed learning subject. Thus, I wanted to challenge myself by doing a completely new project individually and proved my ability and effort by using all the process stages of this project. At the same time, I hoped that I could be able to acquire new knowledge and skills on this self-directed learning project.
At first, I plan to carry out a project on community service. This project aims to benefit the school cleaners in Temasek Polytechnic by holding a community service work to improve awareness of social responsibility among young people. This project is also to deliver the school cleaners with the recognition and appreciation they deserve. Meanwhile, students can have better relate and show their caring to the elderly around them.
However, during the planning stage of the project, I tend to collate all my research under a social study and share it with others to benefit everyone. My final project aims to provide a platform to raise awareness to the youth of preparation for an aging society crisis in Singapore in the future.
As this is the first time for me to do a survey, I have amended the survey several times as the questions that I asked initially are least related to this project. The purpose of creating this survey is to provide me with more insight into what I could have done besides knowing perspectives from the young generation before giving the recommendations for retirement planning.
On 8 Dec 2019, I went to All Saints Home to interview the person-in-charge there to get more resources regarding the reason behind that nursing home and know more about the elderlies. Unfortunately, due to the private and confidential issues, I was unable to get an opportunity to interview them.
Since I have done a lot of the researches and I wished to perform and share as much as possible to the participants during the workshop. I tried to concise all the contents but after getting back the feedback, participants commented that contents are slightly heavy and suggested that can focus the different areas with less depth.
As my workshop was held in the week near the Chinese New Year. Most of the participants who signed up for this workshop were unable to attend it as they had family outing during that timing.
I spent some time to use the features of this. After that, I kept modifying and updating the website to make it more reader-friendly. Besides, I needed to simplify my content and research for the readers as I have too much at once. I unable to get all my information at sorted, so I had to divide and write down my content and research on a book and plan out the sections to the E-Portfolio.
During this semester, my diploma subjects are more higher weightage compare to the past few semesters. Besides of the heavy workload during the normal school days, I have to find the sources for internship opportunities at the same time. To have a family time with my parents, I have to go back to Malaysia every weekend as I am not a local Singaporean.
Initial planning on what I want to do for the GL project
I have deepened my knowledge of retirement planning after doing up so many researches. At first, my first thought on starting retirement planning was that far from my age now. However, I learned that it was never too late to plan early, as age was the key element for this. I have learnt more about the individual responsibilities (with good financial planning) and the planning of the young population for the future in this fast-paced society in Singapore.
I became a more resilient person as I always keep myself enthusiastic about doing my work and focused on the project vision. Without a vision to achieve, it will be easily failing to hit the learning goals, success is much harder to reach. When things no go well, I always encourage myself not to give up but to do all my best.
I have improved more on my communication skills when interacting with the seniors especially when I would like to dig more personal resources from them. Besides, I stand more flexible rather than confident after I have conducted a sharing workshop. As there was nothing that will be exactly the same as what we planned, so we need to always be flexible when facing that kind of situation.
Yes. It is because I have completed my project within the timeline given and perform it to the TP students through a sharing workshop. It might not be very impactful with this small group of students, but with all the feedback that I collected from them, I trust I have successfully planted in the message to their mindsets.
During this period of E-portfolio creation was also my busy period for my CCA interest group, it was a bit hard to balance between spending time refining the website and coping with my other works. But the desire to do something that feeds my passion, helped me to push me through the season.
Since I knew how tough was the progressing of my project, thus I would like to have a tangible end product that can show all my efforts to reach this result. I understand that I might have to devote more time to making an e-portfolio by using a website tool, but for what it is worth, it is never too late.
