Learning assistance

I am available as a private learning assistant at all levels. Feel free to book a 15-minute get-to-know-me session to see if we'd be a good fit!

Experience

I am a 6th-year PhD candidate in the mathematics department at the University of Washington. I have 9+ years of teaching and learning assistance experience (for a list of courses/experience, see my Teaching page)

Method

I use an active, inquiry-based teaching method, customized to each student's individual learning preferences and needs. I firmly believe that math is not about memorizing formulas or manipulating equations (cf. Federico Ardila-Mantilla's axioms). With this in mind, I prioritize the development of the following skills:

Deeply understanding concepts.

Having a deep understanding of a mathematical concept (e.g. why the equation for a circle is x² + y² = r²) develops critical thinking skills and allows students to carry their knowledge and skill into future classes, careers, and more.

Thoughtfully approaching problems.

Conceptual understanding is crucial to approaching math problems well. Coming up with a game plan or outline for each math problem helps students to better understand the task at hand and break it down into manageable steps.

Courses

I currently accept students in the courses listed below. If you are unsure if your needs fall within my scope, please shoot me an email and we can likely work something out!

Please note: I do not accept clients in my own classes.

My availability is limited, and I prefer initial sessions to be booked through my OnceHub booking page.

Feel free to contact me by email (jessieloucks13 [at] gmail [dot] com) to request special accommodations.

If I am unavailable during your preferred times, feel free to reach out to one of my colleagues on this webpage: https://math.washington.edu/people/math-tutors
