My name is Jessica Haak, and I am a PhD candidate and research associate in Comparative Politics at the University of Hamburg. I hold an M.A. in Empirical Democracy Studies from Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and a B.A. in Political Science from Goethe University Frankfurt. Until December 2024, I served as a media editor and editorial assistant at the Journal of Politics. From August to September 2025, I will be a visiting researcher of the Junior Program at GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences in Cologne.
My research focuses on voters and parties, political behavior, and public opinion, particularly in the context of climate change. I am furthermore interested in the digitalization of political parties. In my doctoral thesis, I investigate how extreme weather events influence individuals’ climate policy preferences, attitudes toward climate change, voting behavior, and political elite communication by linking geo-referenced survey data and social media data with weather records.
I supervise bachelor's theses related to my research interests. Students are encouraged to contact me. I teach courses related to comparative politics and climate change opinion.
I am engaged in public debates on Green parties and the political effects of weather, and have contributed expert opinions, for example, to the Guardian, MDR Wissen, and nordbayern.de
