The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
In order for my flip project to meet the Illinois Professional Teaching Standard #5 I used google slides along with the screencast tool. For my use of the google slides I put together a presentation containing 8 slides that teach the learning standard L.1.E for grade 3, which states, "Form and use the simple (e.g., I walked; I walk; I will walk) verb tenses". After I put together the google slide I then used screencast to record myself going through each slide in depth about what the simple verb tenses are and how they are used in a sentence. I incorporated pictures and animations into the google slide help make my information clear to the students and to make it visually stimulating. After creating the screencast of myself going over the google slides I developed a 10 question quiz on google form in which all of the questions were multiple choice where the students are to apply their understanding of the content they learned in the screencast to answer the questions.
In creating these artifacts I was able to connect to several of the aspects in the Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 5. One of the most important ones that I looked at was section 5E which states, "knows techniques for modifying instructional methods, materials, and the environment to facilitate learning for students with diverse learning characteristics". While creating my google slides and screencast I was thinking about how this project could help students learn who may have diverse learning characteristics. I realized that one way this could be helpful is for students who learn better in a quiet space by themselves where they are able to play the information over and over again as many times as they need in order to understand the information given to them. Because it is a video recording of the presentation that is given to them they are able to do exactly that. They are free to watch it as many times as they want and watch it wherever they want. This is a great way to modify how the information is given to the students and the type of environment the information can be given to them in.
In creating this flipped project I was able to see how important and beneficial it is to be creative in your classroom. Being creative and flexible in the way you present the information to your students can really help those students who don't learn well by listening to their teacher lecture in front of class. Not every student learns the same way as everyone else in the class and when you change up how you lay out the information you need to give to them you are giving everyone an opportunity to succeed and grow academically. This is a great tool to use in all classrooms and I know that I plan to use it in my future classroom as a teacher. The google forms quiz is also a great way to receive data and information from the students to determine if how I taught the information was productive or not. It gives me a chance to change up how I teach it and respond with a more appropriate way of giving the students the information. All of the artifacts that I used for this flipped project has taught me how important it is to use varying methods and techniques when I am teaching in my own classroom.
