I'm Jessica Botros, an ESRC-funded PhD student in Economics at the University of Liverpool in partnership with the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) in London. I hold a Master of Science in Economics from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. My research lies at the intersection of education, labour and applied microeconomics with a particular focus on how policy reforms shape long-run outcomes in the labour market and intergenerational mobility.
My Job Market Paper examines the long-term effects of the English Academies Programme on pupils’ labour market outcomes. The programme converted underperforming state schools into academies, which remained publicly funded schools but were managed by external sponsors with greater autonomy. Using UK administrative data from the Longitudinal Education Outcomes dataset and exploiting the staggered timing of school conversions, this paper employs a heterogeneity-robust diff-in-diff and event-study design. Results show that educational gains from academisation translate into improved labour market outcomes in early adulthood: increased earnings, increased employment, and reduced benefit receipt. A key channel underlying these effects is increased post-compulsory educational participation and attainment.
