“Coastal Rhythm” – Watercolor and Ink on Cold-Pressed Paper
This artwork was developed using layered watercolor washes combined with fine ink detailing to capture the movement and energy of Australia's coastal waters. The composition began with a loose pencil sketch to block out major forms such as the arc of the waves, shoreline, and framing eucalyptus.
Watercolor was applied in gradual layers, starting with light washes of blue and sandy beige, and building toward more saturated tones in the sea and sky. Ink was added last using a fine-tip pen to define textures like the ripple of the water, outlines of the fish and turtle, and organic forms along the coast.
The palette draws inspiration from early morning light on the water, with soft blues, pale greens, and muted golden tones. The inclusion of native wildlife, such as the sea turtle and coastal fish, reflects a connection to the rhythm of life within the Australian ecosystem.
This piece is not tied to a specific location but is meant to capture a feeling. It conveys a sensory memory of salt, motion, and open air. It invites the viewer into a space that feels expansive, natural, and intentionally stylized.
Jesse Calay - Winding Fields
“Winding Field” – Watercolor and Ink on Textured Paper
This piece was created using transparent watercolor washes over pencil and ink outlines, layered on textured cold-pressed paper to create a soft but structured landscape. The composition uses a three-plane depth structure, guiding the eye from the foreground plants through the winding path and into the distant mountain range.
The process started with a loose sketch of the central path, which curves naturally through sloping hills. Fine liner pens were then used to establish foliage outlines and horizon lines. Watercolor layers followed, beginning with pale yellow ochre, green-gold, and dusty olive, gradually deepened with blue-gray and forest tones in the distant trees and hills.
The plants in the foreground were left intentionally soft to blend into the paper, giving the overall piece an open, breathable feeling. The goal was to evoke space and movement without overwhelming detail, allowing the winding path to act as the visual anchor.
This work invites interpretation. It represents both solitude and direction, serving as a visual metaphor for open decision-making and quiet transformation. The limited color palette and restrained mark-making reflect calm, steady movement rather than dramatic change.
Jesse Calay - Pool at Dusk
The work draws from the quintessential Australian experience of long, warm evenings spent outdoors. Pools are central to Australian culture, serving as a gathering space for family and community. By setting the scene at dusk, the painting highlights both the natural beauty of the Australian sky and the social joy of swimming after a hot day. The impressionistic brushwork emphasizes movement, warmth, and connection, blending leisure with the country’s unique atmosphere.
“Still Waters” – Ink and Watercolor on Textured Paper
This piece was created using a combination of traditional ink linework and watercolor washes on cold-pressed, textured paper. The scene captures a winding forest stream just after rainfall, with softened edges and muted greens to convey stillness and breath.
The process began with a graphite sketch, followed by fine black ink to outline the trees, water, and natural contours using cross-hatching for texture. Watercolor was layered gradually starting with a diluted base and building up richer greens and cool tones through glazing. The technique was intentionally loose in the foliage to create softness, while the water and tree trunks were more tightly rendered to guide the viewer’s eye.
I chose a limited palette of earth tones and cool blues to reflect the emotional tone of the setting: quiet, grounded, contemplative. The subtle ripples in the stream and pathway disappearing into the background invite the viewer into a moment of calm, making it less a literal landscape and more a symbolic one.

"Pastures in Harmony" - Watercolor and Ink on Textured Paper
This watercolor painting was created using a layered wash technique, beginning with a light, diluted base of greens and yellows to define the rolling fields. As the paint dried, successive layers added depth and texture to the grassy landscape. The cows were painted using a darker pigment blend, applied with a fine brush to maintain their gentle contours while blending subtly with the scenery. The sky was built with wet-on-wet strokes of blue and warm beige to create a soft, cloud-filled atmosphere that enhances the tranquil feel of the piece. Loose brushwork and gentle color transitions help convey the peaceful rhythm of rural life.
