Why I'm Running
I am running for Durham School Board because I believe decisions about our schools must be grounded in experience, informed by educators, and accountable to families.
As a product of Durham Public Schools, a retired DPS high school principal, and the parent of a current DPS junior, I understand our schools from multiple perspectives. I know what it takes to support students, empower educators, and build strong school communities.

About Jerome Leathers
Jerome Leathers is a lifelong advocate for public education and a proud product of Durham Public Schools. His personal and professional experiences within DPS have shaped his deep understanding of the district’s strengths, challenges, and opportunities for growth.
A retired Durham Public Schools high school principal, Jerome spent his career supporting students, empowering educators, and leading school communities with integrity, high expectations, and a strong commitment to equity. He understands firsthand the importance of strong leadership, effective governance, and educator-informed decision-making in creating schools where students can thrive.
Jerome’s commitment to Durham Public Schools is also deeply personal. He and his wife have raised their family in Durham, and they are proud parents of two daughters, one a graduate of Durham Public Schools and one a current DPS student. This lived experience gives Jerome a clear understanding of both the long-term impact of DPS and the realities families face today.
Jerome is running for the Durham School Board, District 4, to ensure that district decisions are student-centered, supportive of educators, and accountable to families and the community. He believes that when we invest in our schools, listen to those closest to the work, and lead with purpose, we strengthen not only our education system but the entire Durham community.
