Jeremy Miller is best known as the Chairman and Founder of Health-E Commerce, the parent company of FSA Store, HSA Store, WellDeserved Health, Medicare OTC, and Caring Mill. Additionally, he is well-known for assisting prospective entrepreneurs and participating in the local community through volunteerism and substantial financial contributions.
Early Years and Career
Jeremy Miller graduated from the University of California's Haas School of Business in 2001 with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He began his career as an operations manager at Gehry Partners, LLP, a full-service architectural business founded in 1962 by renowned architect Frank Gehry. Miller oversaw the company's expansion into three international cities, managed and coordinated the operations of over one hundred global consultants across three continents, served as a liaison between regional project managers and clients, forecasted revenue and profit, and oversaw the human resources department, among other responsibilities.
Miller left Gehry Partners LLP to pursue a degree in entrepreneurship and management at New York's Columbia Business School. He was a Dean's List student and served as a teaching assistant for the university's Greenhouse Entrepreneurship Program and Launching New Ventures Program during his studies. This is when he came up with the concept to launch a healthcare organization focused on educating employees about and maximizing their use of flexible spending accounts (FSA). An FSA, which is arranged through an employer, enables employees to spend their income tax-free on medical expenses; however, as Miller discovered while working at Gehry Partners LLC, many employees were unfamiliar with the process and were thus forfeiting their ability to cover healthcare-related expenses without paying taxes on the income used for this purpose.
Health-E Commerce Is Founded by Jeremy Miller
Jeremy Miller's new business idea earned the Odyssey Global MBA Award for Best Entrepreneurial Business Idea at Columbia Business School. Additionally, the school's Lang Fund, in collaboration with other Angel investors, supplied Jeremy Miller with the capital necessary to launch his new firm. Health-E Commerce began operations in 2010 with the stated objective of "simplifying the tax-free healthcare market in the United States and assisting everyday Americans and businesses in maximizing the benefits of workplace benefits, wellness, and health spending programs." In the same year, the company launched its FSA store to simplify the FSA market and make it easier for consumers to determine which products/services are covered by an FSA account. It was the first e-commerce site dedicated exclusively to FSA-eligible products and continues to maintain the most comprehensive eligibility list for the convenience of users.
Jeremy Miller, never one to rest on his laurels, created the HSA shop in 2015. The store is meant to assist individuals who have a health savings account (HSA) in quickly and conveniently locating HSA-eligible products, maximizing health savings, and stretching HSA money to address routine healthcare needs. Caring Mill is a private-label range of health and wellness goods created in 2017. Health-E Commerce donates a portion of the proceeds from each product sold to the Children's Health Fund, which helps provide quality healthcare to impoverished children. The store pioneered the use of tax-exempt funds to help non-profit organizations. Well Deserved was introduced in 2019 to enable shoppers to use Wellness Rewards to purchase health-related things. Medicare OTC Store, Health-E Commerce's most recent initiative, is a specialized platform designed to make shopping for products covered by Medicare Advantage plans' supplemental OTC benefits simple for older adults.
Health-E-Commerce has been a resounding success. It serves almost 200,000 customers. Jeremy Miller was named an EY Entrepreneur of the Year in 2018 as a result of his successful business concept. Additionally, from 2016 to 2020, his company got Deloitte Technology Fast 500 Awards for being one of the fastest-growing companies in the United States.
Constructing Community and Assisting Charities
Jeremy Miller has always been concerned with the plight of the less fortunate. He not only donates generously through Caring Mill sales, but also volunteers with Save the Children, the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life Manhattan, and the Children's Health Fund.
Additionally, Jeremy Miller has gone above and above to make his business a perfect place to work. Employees of Health-E Commerce are eligible for comprehensive health, vision, and dental coverage, participate in a 401(k) plan, have access to flexible spending and health savings accounts, and can take advantage of telecommuting days and paid time off. The company's Culture Committee organizes enjoyable activities throughout the year to help employees unwind and get to know one another, such as boat trips, movies, meals, laser tag, virtual scavenger hunts, and paint parties. It's unsurprising that Health-E Commerce was named one of Crain's Best Places to Work in New York City for three consecutive years.
Private Life
Jeremy Miller is a firm believer in the value of a balanced work-life balance. He enjoys meditating, boxing, and spending time with his wife and two children while he is not on the job.
