The reference map purposely excludes to much information in order to draw the viewers eyes to the relevant topic. An inlay map shows viewers the location of Hamilton County and includes a legend, north arrow and scale bar with relevant data sources.
Toxic Release Inventory data from 2020 was obtained containing air pollution data output in the form of pounds. This data was input and displayed as a Graduated Symbol Map, displaying the greatest amount of output in the county. Much of this output is centered along major industrial areas within the county, specifically river ports and rail lines.
Utilizing tract data downloaded from the U.S. Census Bureau to access the African American population in Hamilton County in 2020, this data is displayed to show the percentage of African Americans per county tract. This was accomplished by normalizing the data by dividing the African American population by the total population. Historically, much of the African American population has been centered in the county.
Using the census and pollution data, a bivariate map was produced displaying low and high percentages of air pollution and the African American population throughout the county. The bivariate map displays where high percentages of both sets of data occur simultaneously. There does appear to be a high correlation of either.
