Jeremy Camp's newest album When You Speak has a cohesiveness and spiritual maturity that I can hear in every song. Following up his string of hit songs, "Reckless," "He Knows," "Word of Life," "Dead Man Walking," and "Whatever May Come," is his newest single "Getting Started." If you like Jeremy's previous hit songs of worship like "There will be a Day," "Jesus Saves," and "Christ in Me," then you'll also enjoy this song and album.

"Getting Started" is one of my favorite songs of the year. Every song on this great new album has a catchy and engaging style and worshipful message. This new song and album represent a perfect blend of what I've always loved about Jeremy Camp's music ministry with every song reflecting his personal testimony and his biblical worldview. I had the great opportunity to speak with Jeremy in person about "Getting Started."

Please share the personal story behind the song.

This whole season and the "When You Speak" song and album concept's about when we listen to the Word of God that's where we find truth and His Word doesn't return void, but when we listen to the enemy, that's where we find discouragement. Disappointments and discouragements are what we've been seeing all around us. Being cooped up for a couple of years and wondering if anyone sees us and our situations are what birthed this song. So many of us get to that place where we forget the Scripture that the old things have passed away and we are new creations in Christ. No matter where you are in your life, if you're young, if you're old when you lay your life down and surrender to Him, you are just getting started. That's what this song is about.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Ezekiel 36:26 (NKJV): "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh."

Philippians 3:13-14 (NKJV): "Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."

Isaiah 43:18-19 (NKJV): "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland."

Ephesians 4:22-24 (NKJV): "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV): "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

Lamentations 3:22-23 (NKJV): "Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness."

Romans 8:31 (NKJV): "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:38-39 (NKJV): "For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Matthew 6:33-34 (NKJV): "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."

What is the takeaway message?

Forget the former things, and don't dwell on the past. His mercies are new every morning. Great is His faithfulness. This song speaks to those who don't know Christ, and if you give your life to Christ, you are literally getting started. For those who have been battling with purpose, battling with guilt over what they've done, and struggling with things that are holding them back, God forgives you and you can move forward. I believe we are all truly getting started. If you are older and you feel like your purpose is gone, no, every day His mercies are new. If we can walk in that, we can realize that no matter what, we are stepping into something new and fresh every day and God can use us in a radical way. The song is an encouragement to all of us that God sees us. God can breathe new life in you. He can do something new for all of us.

Lyrics:

Are you running round in circles with no place to go?

Is there a person in the mirror you don't even know?

Someone still sees who you are

Were you the kid that was a dreamer, now you don't believe?

Are you the lock that got so broken, now you lost the key?

Someone still loves who you are

To anyone who ever lost your way

To everyone who ever felt ashamed

Here's a song for all the broken-hearted

I believe you're only getting started

To anyone who trusts in Jesus' name

Watch your world become forever changed

Here's a song about light from darkness

I believe you're only getting started

If you only knew the treasure that you really are

If you could understand the measure of the Father's heart

He loves you, He loves you, He loves you

Fall in His arms and let Him wash you clean

He'll tear off the chains so that you can be free

A new life begins and the old is redeemed

Oh I believe

To anyone who ever lost your way

To everyone who ever felt ashamed

Here's a song for all the broken-hearted

I believe you're only getting started

To anyone who trusts in Jesus' name

Watch your world become forever changed

Here's a song about light from darkness

I believe you're only getting started

He loves you, He loves you, He loves you

He loves you, He loves you, He loves you

To anyone who ever lost your way

To everyone who ever felt ashamed

Here's a song for all the broken-hearted

I believe you're only getting started

To anyone who trusts in Jesus' name

Watch your world become forever changed

Here's a song about light from darkness

I believe you're only getting started

Closing Thoughts

This is a solid new collection of Scripture-based songs and declaration-style anthems designed to inspire listeners to fight the good fight of faith. "Getting Started" articulates what it means to live a God-centered life in a turbulent world. The song's message is that, as believers, we're living out a faith journey. And, like Abraham and Sarah, we're living in faith with hopeful expectations. Jeremy is following God's leading in his life.

If we believe Jesus is who He says, we will want to speak up for Him. Christians are brand-new people on the inside. The Holy Spirit gives us new life and we are not the same anymore. We are new creations in Christ, and we need to live as children of God.

These words are a daily prayer you could sing and pray, asking God to come and change our hearts and change our lives in such a way that our behavior and the way we live flow from God living inside of us as believers. My daily prayer is that I pray to God every morning to inhabit me with the fruit of the Spirit: "love, joy, peace, patience, faithfulness, gentleness, kindness, and self-control." If you've put all your hope and trust in Jesus, there's nothing that can separate you from His love. If you think about the type of faith we are called to have as believers, it is described as the faith of a mustard seed.

This song really reflects the joy we receive when we don't rely on our own understanding, but instead, fully submit ourselves to faithfulness and trust in the ability of Jesus to lift us up no matter our circumstances. Remember that "man shall not live by bread alone but by every Word of God." Being a Christian means that we walk by faith, not by sight. Faith requires us to rely on the unseen. We all walk by faith every day. The beauty of walking by faith and not by sight is that we can learn to more fully trust God with our lives. God tells us in the Bible that with faith, we can do anything in Christ. I'm completely convicted by the strong lyrics and find immense comfort in this song filled with biblical truth. His love is never-ending, and He is our refuge and our strength.

This song is a personal testimony to the power of redemption. The song has quickly become one of my daily devotional prayers of thankfulness to God for showing me grace and forgiveness despite my failures. We serve a loving and merciful God who accepts us as we are, not who we pretend to be. God's mercy is new each day, and it is not based on our performance, or what we can do for God. He pours out His mercy despite what we've done, there's nothing we can do except trust in His Son Jesus.

"Getting Started" is a great celebratory anthem about what it means to have hope in Christ. Sometimes it is hard to believe that God loves us so much that He knows us intimately and He wants to fill our hearts with love. He knows our brokenness inside and out, and because of what Jesus did on the Cross, He sees us as righteous. God sees us as He sees His Son. It's not our righteousness, appearance or talent, or gifting, it is just Jesus. As we reflect on Easter, that gives us cause to celebrate and sing out to Him: "To anyone who ever lost your way/To everyone who ever felt ashamed/Here's a song for all the broken-hearted/I believe you're only getting started." Amen to that.
