Jen-Shuo Liu is a researcher and engineer specializing in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and visual computing. He designs user interfaces and visualizations grounded in cognitive science, perception, and human–computer interaction to support users in complex tasks such as equipment maintenance, teleoperation, and spatial data exploration. In parallel, he develops algorithms for image and video processing, including HDR color processing and perceptual enhancement techniques, with applications ranging from immersive display pipelines and AR visual guidance to traditional displays such as TVs and projectors.
His Ph.D. work at Columbia University focused on adaptive precueing systems that guide users in AR/VR environments through visual cues aligned with task structure and motor behavior. He conducted extensive user studies—analyzing gaze, hand, and head movement data—and applied statistical tools such as ANOVA and linear mixed-effects models to evaluate interface performance.
Previously, Jen-Shuo worked at Samsung Research America, where he led immersive video processing initiatives. His work spanned HDR image and video processing, color perception modeling, and algorithm development to enhance visual quality in next-generation display and broadcast systems. This built on his master’s research at National Taiwan University, where he developed real-time color compensation techniques for optical see-through AR and projector-based AR systems. His algorithms modeled inter-pixel coupling and incorporated principles of visual perception, resulting in patents and award-winning demonstrations.
Jen-Shuo’s research has been published in leading venues such as IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG), IEEE Transactions on Image Processing (TIP), ACM Transactions on Graphics (TOG), IEEE ISMAR, and ACM VRST. His work has been supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation and recognized through demos at the NYC Media Lab Summit (2018 & 2019) and ICME 2015.
He is an active contributor to the HCI and AR/VR communities, serving on the Program Committee for CHI Late-Breaking Work (2023–2025). He is also Publicity & Communications Chair (2024–2025) and Pitch-Your-Lab Chair (2025) for IEEE ISMAR, and Standardization Chiar for IEEE VR 2026.
