About Dreadlocks
"Dreadlocks", "Dreads", "Jata" or "Locs" have represented different things to different people and cultures over time.
Dreadlocks are wonderful, bold and at times dramatic, epitomising freedom of expression.
Dreadlocks can represent more than a hair choice. They can symbolise the release of material possessions or signify rebellion and a way to thumb one's nose at social conformity. Most just like the way they look.
Locs are most commonly linked to Rasta or the Rastafarian movement. Rastafarianism is a religion born in Jamaica during the 1930s. Rastafarianism is considered by religious scholars to be both a new religion and a social movement.
Dreadlocks have been long associated with all things Jamaican and for this reason, many people think Jamaicans invented locs. History however tells a different story. In 2500 B.C., we find that "The Vedas", Hinduism’s oldest scriptures in the Sanskrit language depicts the Hindu God Shiva wearing "locs" or “jata” (Dr. Bert Ashe’s book, Twisted: My Dreadlocks Chronicles).
The ancient Egyptian pharaohs also wore dreadlocks, and this is demonstrated by tomb carvings, drawings, artifacts as well as mummified bodies that have been recovered with their locs still intact. The Old Testament tells us of Samson, who lost his strength once his locs were shaved off. In Africa, tribes such as the Maasai warriors are renowned for having amazing deadlocks to which they dedicate many hours styling, decorating, and painting (red).
Step forward in time to the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and dreadlocks are reintroduced into mainstream hair culture by the late Bob Marley, actress Whoopi Goldberg, Lauryn Hill, Lenny Kravitz and Snoop Dog. American novelists Toni Morrison and Alice Walker also proudly wear them. Even Justin Bieber has tried dreadlocks, but he really could have done with our Dreadlock Human Hair extensions!
Can my extensions be coloured, bleached or toned?
You can darken but never lighten your Dreadlock Human Hair extensions. You MUST NEVER bleach them. Bleaching will tend to permanently ruin extensions which are very porous.
Chemical treatments are not recommended and dyeing extensions without the support of your professional stylist or loctician is at your own risk. We cannot guarantee any colour treatment and note that the application of chemicals may harm or even ruin your precious dreadlocks.
