Once Upon A Time
There was an ugly beast named Rama; he lived alone in a swamp after his father Dasharatha had banished him from his home. He liked living alone and never wanted any company. He spent his days eating worms and snails while enjoying his mud baths. Rama only valued his privacy but also felt lonely at times.
One day he was going about his day when he noticed that there was a great spirit that approached him in the forest. He could not see the spirit, but he could feel the presence of one. He called out, "Who is there?" with a timid voice. The spirit told him he meant him no harm and that Rama was destined to do great things and that he had a task to fulfill. Rama knew he was always accompanied by a ghost but didn't realize until just then that it was the God of Wisdom.
The spirit said, "There is a Princess that is locked away in a tower that will die if a great warrior does not save her." Rama had never thought of himself as a great warrior because of how everyone treated him. The Princess's parents locked her away long ago because she was different from their other children. They worried that she was a witch and would surely be killed because she was different. There was a sizeable fire-spitting dragon guarding her for the rest of her days.
Rama listened to the spirit and headed out on his journey. He walked for three days to reach his destination. The only things he brought with him were his magical sword and armor. When he arrived, he saw the tall tower surrounded by a flaming lava moat. The dragon was an enormous size and roared with a great force. He started to cross the lava pit across this rickety bridge when he heard a loud calling for help. It was the Princess, Sita. "Help me, brave warrior!" screamed Sita. Rama quickly drew his sword and sprinted up a broken stairwell. He could listen to the dragon in the distance, so he knew he had to work fast.
Once he climbed many stories to reach the top of the tower, he burst open the door to a beautiful princess with two hundred feet worth of hair, and he was in awe.
Sita and Rama could hear the dragon coming, but Sita could not escape because her hair was tied in knots to chains. Sita's hair gave her magical powers and was the reason she was locked away because people saw her as a witch. Rama immediately knew why he was sent here; his mother had been murdered long ago because people saw her as a witch. He had finally discovered his destiny.
Rama cut her hair that was tied to the chains off with his mighty sword, and they hurried to the window, swung down by a vine, and managed to escape the dragon.
They fell in love and lived happily ever after in Rama's swamp... with a few children.
Author's Notes:
The first line of the story includes details about how people viewed Shrek ( ugly and a beast) and then refers to how Rama was different but still regarded as great, like Shrek. The story starts as the story Shrek but included characters from the Ramayana. I thought this was a good story to portray Rama in because Shrek was also different from others. The fire-spitting dragon comes from Shrek, the movie. Most of this story was based on the accounts of the movie Shrek because it's one of my favorites.
I included spirits that were not originally in the story Shrek. I changed my account at the end by adding bits and pieces from other fairy tales. Sita's character come from a mix of the storyline of Repunzel, where her hair has magic in it.
Shrek is portrayed as Rama, but in the same storyline as the Ramanyana. I also added a twist to the storyline by mentioning that his mother was a witch. I did this so I could tie these two characters together for a deeper purpose and to show why Rama was sent there. I chose my images off a website called Utah Krishna, and I picked this one because it shows an excellent visual of Rama and Sita, and how Rama portrays Shreks in his color difference from the other characters. Rama is portrayed as blue with his identity as Vishnu.
