CliftonStrengths
I am logical, which is why I can help others make sense of math and science. Being an interpersonal linguist helps me to break down such stressful subjects. As an interpersonal intelligence, I work best when helping, prioritizing, and managing people. I am adept at working in a leadership role as well as part of a team, as those are closely related.
Other intelligence strengths include the ability to think while moving and enjoy being surrounded by nature. These come out when teaching as dynamic and practical examples. I am certainly not one of those teachers that quietly sits behind her desk and lectures. I have energy, enthusiasm, and passion for the job. I believe empathy and motivation make any job more engaging and easier to do.
Life is exciting. It never made sense to me to hide my enthusiasm and appreciation of life.
Below is a picture from my summer in Ecuador, teaching English to summer school students. This was a day off, swinging off the world.
Being strong in both interpersonal and linguistic skills showcase my natural ability to deliver information effectively. I enjoy speaking to a group. However, I love working with my colleagues toward our common goal of educating people. My primary learning style reflects communication; I prefer to work in an environment where people are dedicated to enhancing our shared objective.
Not only do I love teaching science and math, but I love experiencing them in practical and useful ways.
I love cooking. I enjoy playing with the science behind cooking. Knowing that baking soda and yeast are both rising agents, but accomplish their task in very different ways have always fascinated me. I have taught chemistry through baking. I have used crushed fruit and markers to demonstrate diffusion and molecular bonding properties of water.
I have used cookie recipes to help students practice fractions of a recipe (cut a recipe in thirds, multiply a recipe by 7).
If a student can cut a recipe into a sixth, they have the ability to understand and solve any fraction problem they will come across in their lives.
That is how I teach.
I worked for both Sylvan Learning Services and ACES Tutoring. Tutoring is so much fun for me because I practice tailoring my teaching style to my audience. There is nothing more challenging than only being able to rely on your own creativity to keep a student engaged and interested in Geometry on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
