While directing a licensed child care center in Ohio during 1996 I decided that I didn’t like the way the children were being cared for and I was not able to make the changes to better the environment for the staff or children when I didn’t own the business. It was then that I decided I needed to make a change. A change for myself and the children I would care for. I started my family child care home that August 1997 and was full within weeks of opening. I guess others were looking for what I wanted to provide too. I started with a family setting that was very small and provided care for six to eight children daily on my own. I offered a safe place where the children attended the local story hour at the local library, went on long walks, monthly trips to the Columbus Zoo, and lots of free play time where the children could enjoy themselves and each other in a close knit group. The children didn’t have multiple teachers, they spend hours outside when the weather was nice, they were able to be with their siblings, and I could change the schedule when a child was having a rough day to meet their needs. The parents could trust that I would be with their child all day and I was educated and willing to meet their child’s individual needs plus form a bond with their child that would be a long term relationship to nurture their child. That is what I have been offering ever since and love what I do. I have since expanded and changed my program due to licensing rules and learning more over the years what prepares children for life first and school too!
