  • pgfjs_data.do - Create a panel of useful raw variables from BHPS data (requires raw BHPS data Waves 1-17, available from the UK Data Archive).
    • Some data are based on employment histories, using an updated version of Gillian Paull's excellent Employment Histories for BHPS Waves 1-11 (UK Data Archive SN4705). These require bhpshist1, bhpshist2 and bhpshist3.
  • pgfjs_dataset.do - Manipulate the variables.
    • industry.do - Recode SIC80 to SIC92 (to deal with classification change during Waves 1-17). This recode is based on the Occupational Information Unit, Office for National Statistics, document OOSS USER GUIDE 1990:09 - Standard Industrial Classification of Economic Activities: Mapping of SIC(80) to SIC(92) and Mapping of SIC(92) to SIC(80) and requires recode_SIC80_to_SIC92.do.
    • ONS data on regional GVA (GVA regional.txt), regional unemployment (LFS and Claimant Count measures, u_LFS_all.txt and u_CC_all.txt respectively), prices and inflation (prices and inflation.txt), and industry output (IOA.txt, IOP.txt and IOS_q.txt).
  • pgfjs.do
    • Use POLS (van Praag and Ferrer-i-Carbonnel 2008) and ordered probit to produce Tables 1, 3, 4 and 5.
    • Conduct robustness checks using selection models, payslip-check, exact statement of basic wage rate, and within-sample switch to Dependent Interviewing.
      • This do file produces results included in the Online Appendix as well as results for the main paper.
  • "partial structural change tests - gross earnings.do" and "partial structural change tests - basic wage rate.do" - Conduct bi-directional tests for intercept and/or slope breaks in the pay growth-job satisfaction relationship:
    • These are Bai-Perron (1998,2003) / Andrews (1993) SupF tests for unknown breakpoints (Table 2).
