Professional Self-Introduction
Hey! My name is Jenna Lang. I am a freshman at Coastal Carolina University. I run for their Track and Cross-Country team. I am majoring in Early Childhood Education. I have spent a lot of time in a classroom environment, starting my junior and senior year of high school. I took a child development class that was incorporated into the preschool at my high school. We worked with the preschoolers three times a week, creating lesson plans and teaching them, as well as playing with them. We also traveled to elementary schools within our district and taught in the classrooms for a full day. My first semester here at CCU, I was able to go and shadow a 1st grade classroom three times. Becoming a teacher has been my dream, and I love this major.
Personal Educational Philosophy
My educational philosophy is based on how I can make a child's life better on a day to day basis. I have had past teachers that have made class exciting, teachers who have made their classroom a comfortable, safe, stress-free environment, and teachers who have always cared about what was going on in my life outside of school. These qualities are important to me. I strive to carry on these qualities as a future teacher. I think that teaching isn't just about giving tests and assignments and walking students through different lessons. It is so much more than that. Children spend years of their lives going to school almost every day. It is necessary for teachers to make their classroom a safe space, care for and tend to each student's needs inside and outside of the classroom, form a relationship with each student, and let the students know that they are loved. This is what I think is the most important part of being a teacher. Leave an impact.
Reflection
Over the past semester, I have learned several different ways of teaching using online tools and techniques. The artifacts collected in my portfolio will contribute to my future learning career because I will have knowledge on a new skill set and method of teaching to make my teaching style more exciting, diverse, and engaging. I can look back on past lessons and use them as inspiration for my future lessons. The artifacts that I feel has stretched my knowledge and skill set the most was blended learning and screen capturing. Blended learning is a productive way to teach because it constitutes three different learning methods for a lesson, which I think makes the lesson more engaging and successful. The screen capturing will be beneficial because I can easily demonstrate detail-by-detail how to do something on the computer and share it will students or parents. I would like to do over my screen capturing assignment because mine was not full screen. I need to learn how to do it full screen. Overall, my portfolio will inspire future lessons, give me knowledge on how to incorporate different media techniques, how to be a better teacher for my students, and how to help other teachers as well.
