My name is Jena Parks and I am a Junior English and Marketing double major at Baldwin Wallace University. In my college career thus far, I have focused most of my energy on refining my written and verbal communication skills both in my English and Marketing degrees and in my various positions on and off-campus. I am currently both a Resident Assistant and a Peer Leader on my campus, wherein I use my expertise of my campus and of the resident halls to aid in any questions my peers may have. Last semester I also worked as a Grant Proposal Writer with a local non-profit organization, the Cleveland Kids' Book Bank. During my time with the Book Bank I was able to work with full-time staff to write and submit a complete Grant Proposal for a project they run called Books Like Me, wherein we were awarded $3,250. I am enthusiastic not only to be able to cultivate these skills in a way that is more applicable to a professional space, but to also enrich skills such as organization and the practical use of my marketing background.
My ideal position involves using both my skills in communication and grant proposal writing to work with a team to write Grant Proposals for a non-profit organization. This position would allow me to cultivate my different business communication skills while also supporting my interest in Grant Proposal Writing and allowing me to explore Grant Proposal Writing in different contexts outside of my previous experience. I have a specific interest in working with an organization that specializes in sustainability, as I have a background in sustainable initiatives through my work on the Baldwin Wallace Sustainability Committee and through my various coursework involving sustainability. I am open to working with any organization that is involved in community development, though.
As previously mentioned, I worked with a local non-profit called the Cleveland Kids' Book Bank where I wrote and submitted a complete Grant Proposal and was awarded $3,250 for the project it supported. Through this experience I was able to develop my professional communication skills, specifically my email communication skills, as I had to get a majority of the information I needed for the proposal from various full-time employees working at the Book Bank. I was also able to cultivate my leadership skills, as I worked on this project with two other individuals, managing all three of our time spent working on the project and assigning different tasks to be completed by the three of us. Finally, of course, I developed skills in Grant Proposal Writing itself as I learned about what goes into writing a grant proposal and how to format that information into a completed project that effectively communicates an organization's need for grant assistance.
