Volunteering within the community has always given me an avenue to share my time and talents with others. Each time, I know I have given my best and made a positive impact. I am committed to fulfilling the responsibility I accept. I have been grateful for the opportunity to work in these rewarding roles.
My involvement and investment in Berlin schools has grown over the past 7 years in various capacities.
The spark to run for Berlin Board of Education was ignited this past spring during the town’s budget referendums. I attended BOE, Board of Finance and Town Council meetings to listen as well as to voice my feedback that the proposed budget for our schools was too low. As an advocate for high-quality education, and keeping the best interests of students and educators in mind, I felt the pull to get more involved in the process.
While attending BOE meetings, there was much more than budget discussions. I also heard more about
the curriculum and how it is being tied into student activities and classroom experiences
the use of technology and the need to keep it updated
student and staff achievements
highlights from school administrators and educators
the implementation of the RULER technique for social and emotional learning
There is much more to these meetings that is being missed by so many people. Understandably, hectic schedules may make it difficult to regularly tune in to BOE meetings. There needs to be alternative ways to communicate what is happening in our schools so it doesn’t seem like the best kept secret – the positive things as well as the challenges and where improvements can be made.
Likewise, elected officials should welcome citizen participation and feedback and not be afraid to have difficult conversations.
It is important for people to feel heard and to have access to information needed in order to have a better understanding to make an informed vote on key items like the budget.
