As I age, I feel less and less like I owe prettiness to society. I have realised I have more worth and am more interesting than solely my outward appearance. I find freedom in ageing and in embracing the changes I am beginning to see in my face and body. My self portrait reflects my interest in and acceptance of my unconventional features, blemishes and pigmentation and allows me to play with and exaggerate these elements. The absence of a smile is both liberating and powerful - I have always been told to “cheer up” and “smile”. I feel power in depicting my relaxed, unmasked face.
