Jeff Vallance, PhD

Professor, Athabasca University

Thank you for visiting my e-portfolio!

I am currently a Professor in the Faculty of Health Disciplines at Athabasca University. I have been in this role since 2007, the start of my career. I currently hold a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Management (has just been renewed until 2023) and formerly held a Population Health Investigator Award from Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions and a New Investigator Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (the first such awards for an AU faculty member). I am an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Cummings School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. I completed my PhD at the University of Alberta under the supervision of Dr. Kerry Courneya (master's thesis under the supervision of Dr. John Dunn) and my undergraduate degree in Human Kinetics at the University of British Columbia (Point Grey Campus).

My initial plan was to become a high school physical education teacher, but obviously, that changed! We all have unique journey's on how we came to be where we are...more information on my journey can be found here: https://www.ualberta.ca/kinesiology-sport-recreation/alumni/alumni-spotlight/jeff-vallance

When speaking to academic accolades, I despise using the term 'I'. It really is a team effort and I've been so fortunate to have incredible collaborators, mentors, and graduate students. So, I choose to use the word 'we'. To date, we have published over 125 peer-reviewed publications, many in excellent journals in our field. Our research program explores physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and related health outcomes in the chronic disease context. Most of our work has been in the area of cancer, but we have begun exploring other chronic disease including stroke survivors, individual with GI diseases, and kidney transplant recipients. A particular strength of our research program, is the pursuit of knowledge translation efforts to increase the likelihood that our research impacts the greatest amount of cancer survivors as possible. Such activities include the publication of a book (Fight Exercise with Breast Cancer, Lone Pine Publishing) and accompanying iTunes app, and participating in patient education initiatives via mediums including video and podcast.

I have also developed and maintained an exemplar teaching and student supervision track record, evidence of which is found in this e-portfolio. I have been active in my faculty and in my profession on behalf of the University at the provincial, national, and international levels.

My partner (Lorian Taylor, RD, PhD) works in academia as the Research Director of ASCEND (Alberta's Collaboration of Excellence for Nutrition and Digestive Diseases) at the University of Calgary. We have three children who keep us busy (Rhys, 8, Ben, 11, and Kaitlyn, 14). Two lovely Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers named Sydney (BBPIS Can Ch. Tyrone's In the Naaame of Love) and Crosby (Can Ch. Bumblebeary's Wild Honey) also keep us busy.

I appreciate you taking the time to peruse my e-portfolio. Never hesitate to reach out.

Jeff
