Date: 1/4/21
Setting: Bryant Family Pharmacy
Length: 25 minutes
Learners: Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacists, Cashiers (14 learners)
Preparation Time: 6 hours
Comfort Level: Ample preparation resulted in a high comfort level for this activity. In anticipation of the COVID vaccine arrival, I spent many hours educating myself on the different COVID vaccines.
Teaching/Assessment Materials Used: A handout listing the most important information on, and emphasizing the key differences between the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines was presented and discussed. The pharmacy’s anaphylaxis protocol was also reviewed.
Methods for Assessing Learner’s Understanding: Random questions were asked of the staff to ensure that understanding had occurred. The learning was reinforced as the staff correctly answered questions through countless phone calls from patients. The time spent teaching the staff resulted in not needing the pharmacist to answer every question regarding the COVID vaccines. Direct observation was the primary form of assessment.
Teaching Goals Addressed:
Goal 1: Deliver concise, organized, and effective presentations to facilitate learning
This goal was to determine which information was most valuable to those who would be answering front line calls. I developed a handout to aid with the topic discussion. I emphasized key information from the allergic reaction protocol in the event of any adverse reaction to the vaccines. The staff meeting lasted 25 minutes, so the material needed to be concise and efficient in order to cover all the points and still have time for question and answers.
Goal 3: Provide valuable and timely feedback to learners
Feedback was provided immediately to technicians and peers. If there was a question about the vaccine that the staff could not answer, it was directed to me for an explanation. This proved an effective method of addressing questions regarding the vaccine.
Brief Impression of Teaching Success: I was able to explain to the staff important aspects of the vaccines as they became available. I was also able to reduce the difficulty of answering questions for both the technicians and the pharmacists by discussing the questions that patients were most likely to ask. I am confident the pharmacy personnel have a very good knowledge of the vaccine as they have consistently answered correctly the questions asked by countless customers. Improvement could have been made by addressing the vaccination phases. These were not addressed initially and had to be discussed in a more impromptu session.

Date: 2/19/21
Setting: UAMS residency seminar
Length: 40 minutes
Learners: PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residents (6 learners)
Preparation Time: 6 hours
Comfort Level: I was not comfortable with drug-induced nutrient deficiency when the residency year started. With the help of a student on rotation and a past business project of one of the residents, I felt comfortable presenting this topic.
Teaching/Assessment Materials Used: I prepared a PowerPoint presentation to facilitate learning.
Methods for Assessing Learner’s Understanding: A Kahoot game was used to assess if learning had occurred.
Teaching Goals Addressed:
Goal 1: Deliver concise, organized and effective presentations to facilitate learning
After presenting the material, I surveyed the learners to determine which sections of the lecture were must beneficial and which parts could be tailored. Learner feedback increased my confidence in combining games and lectures to facilitate learning. The feedback indicated that the lecture was an appropriate length and covered beneficial information.
Goal 2: Tailor personalized instruction to encourage learning in individual and group settings
In this lecture, I utilized the Kahoot game to facilitate and ensure learning.
Goal 3: Provide valuable and timely feedback to learners
I provided feedback to the other residents regarding correct and incorrect answers during the Kahoot game. It allowed me to correct any misunderstandings immediately and reinforce critical points.
Brief Impression of Teaching Success: Based on the responses I received from the learners, combining the lecture with a game is an effective way to facilitate learning. As this topic seemed to be unfamiliar to the learners, it leads me to conclude that identifying a need helped in making the presentation a success. Improvement can be made by anticipating questions that may be asked by the students. This would allow for better and more complete answers to be given.
