Music Building
The Music Building at Cal State East Bay was completed in 1965 at a cost of about two and a half million dollars. Its distinctive circular construction was created for acoustical excellence, using non-parallel walls throughout. It was designed by architects Kitchen and Hunt. The acoustical engineer was Gerald Strong.
The building houses 68 practice rooms, 37 instruction rooms, and can accommodate 500 students. It contains a 200-seat coral rehearsal hall and an equally large instrumental rehearsal hall. A lovely feature of the building is the enclosed courtyard that is a favorite gathering place for students, as well as the birds that like to nest there.
The exterior design incorporates a brick-bordered peristyle, well suited to outdoor concerts. There is ample room to set up seating in the grassy mall area in front of the main entrance.
Construction of the building was done by the Guy F. Atkinson Company. The view looking up through the colonnade is quite dramatic.
