Humanity has long been entranced with the night sky, and many cultures have their own constellations and subsequent stories of those constellations. In fact, the origins of the Zodiac is traced back to Babylon, and astrology has been dated to the 2nd millennium BCE (before the common era). Astrology has its roots in calendrical systems used to predict seasonal shifts and to interpret celestial cycles as signs of divine communications, with some of the earliest cultures to do this being China, India, and the Mayan Civilization. Western astrology, is one of the oldest systems of astrology still in use today. Its roots can be traced to 19th century BCE Mesopotamia. From Mesopotamia, it spread to Ancient Greece, Rome, the Arab world and eventually Central and Western Europe.
Today, astrology is often used as a form of divination in association with horoscopes, personality traits, and predictions of life events based on the cosmic positions of the moon, planets, and stars. Sun sign astrology is the most common form used in modern times, but astrology is much more in depth than just the sun sign. After the sun sign, there's the moon's sign, the planet signs (a sign for each one), ascendant, as well as the qualities — cardinal, fixed, and mutable. You can figure out all of your signs by creating a birth chart.
There are twelve astrological signs in the Zodiac, and each sign is associated with an element: fire, earth, air, water. These four elements are prevalent in many cultures, and hold a lot of symbolism. They are considered to be the energy force that sustains life, and integral parts of the universe and the human body. This is why it's believed that human beings were made and ruled by these four elements. There is also a fifth element that goes by many names. Many people call this element "spirit." In Latin, it's called "quintessence," (translates to "the fifth element").
In western astrology, fire and air signs are considered masculine, while water and earth signs are considered feminine. The first sign in the Zodiac is Aries — a fire sign. This is followed by Taurus (earth), Gemini (air), and Cancer (water). This pattern repeats for all twelve signs to the very last. The astrological order is: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
The stories I included in my storybook are mostly Greek in origin, but there are some from different cultures. These stories give the origin for the constellations in the sky and how they pertain to astrology.
